Ex-human

In the near future, a technological revolution is once again underway as digital influencers infiltrate both your private and social spheres, even to the extent of appropriating your identity. This emerging virtual spectacle uncovers divergent narratives concerning consciousness, the body and affects. Does the appearance of your doppelgänger on screen motivate you to engage?

"Ex-Human" is an installation that consists of a 2-computer/station network where a selfie taken by a participant triggers, without their knowledge, a chain reaction of automatised commands, culminating in two short videos of deepfakes of them. Between the deepfakes, an artificial host named TransLator introduces this near future, while adopting the viewpoint held by some communities that animals are considered ex-humans (*Amerindian perspectivism). This perspective helps TransLator to contemplate the artificial-entities’ condition as they transition to becoming self-aware and also the ex-humans (participant) condition as they transition to animals.

While we play with the performativity behind the “exploitation of the self” on social media platforms, our intention is to enable us to challenge our intellectual automatisms, and reconsider whether we are performing for the algorithm or whether we are self-aware when we create and consume content online.
